My collaboration with the University of Denver (DU) continues. My familiarity with the student organization, Native Student Alliance, at DU grew and we were able to work more closely for the marketing collateral of the pow wow.

2018’s theme was a revisit to a 1989 film called Pow Wow Highway. It lives today among many Indigenous people as a cultural icon, especially in North America. The poster, flyers, banners, and t-shirt designs play on the movie title and movie poster.

The Restoration and Preservation of Traditional Native Art Forms and Knowledge within the American Indian College Fund (AICF) desired a logomark to represent the programming that involves “enhance the capacity of traditional Native art forms and knowledge at participating TCUs in the upper-Midwest.”

The logo design incorporates colors and typography derived from the brand guidelines of the AICF. The art was hand generated through various sketches and revisions to represent a few elements found in the Traditional Native Art Forms and Knowledge program. One element, which may be more obvious, is a traditional basket weaving. The other element is the concept of the knowledge sharer and the learners.

The Center for Multicultural Excellence (CME) at the University of Denver approached me to create a unifying theme for the 2017 New Beginnings Pow Wow. As with all of my projects, I researched their past events and their competing events to gauge my approach.

The theme they decided on was “Water is Life.” This theme revolves around the environment issues in the current social and political landscape. DU has a strong branding presence and I used it within the project, which made the DU marketing department very happy. The photography and copy were provided by CME. With the wealth of information they provided, I was able to create a hierarchy to fit all the information on the correlating marketing collateral.

The teaser flyers were a 4-up on letter-sized, which included veterans of the armed forces. The campaign rounded off with letter-sized and tabloid-size posters and t-shirts for participants and made available for sale. For the first time in the events history, the shirts made the most sales and positive reviews of the design.

Badwinds is my moniker in the art scene. While I my reach into various disciplines of the art form, my longstanding goal is to create fine art. It serves as an educational tool and allows me to contribute to Indian Art from my perspective.

Through this venture, I have incorporated graphic & web design, marketing, and advertising to generate sales and an audience for my contemporary Native American fine art. I have fostered one-on-one customer relations, developed social media campaigns, wrote and designed email newsletters, engaged with networking opportunities, and funded my own print advertising. My marketing abilities, while self-taught, has led me to having my art recognized on a national level. My art goes beyond gurative and landscape works by creating a platform to engage my audience in Native American history, culture, and politics. Identity vibrates at the core of my mission for my artwork. It resonates with my target audience of the Native American youth. My educational journey, in artistic form, communications humorous narratives and uses pop culture to create a connection between myself and the youth. By constantly improving this formula, my work gradually continues to impact the larger community.
